A libraries is a place where books are stores for reading. It is an educational institution like a school or college. In a school or campus, we are taught by others; in a library, we have to read ourselves. Besides books, libraries have magazines and journals. Some libraries arrange film shows and lectures.
Libraries are old institutions. But the growth of libraries began in the nineteenth century. In ancient times, libraries were few and far between. Nowadays we have libraries in every cities. Some libraries have millions of books. Towns have small libraries. Rich countries have many libraries, while poor countries have only a few libraries. Our country has only a few libraries.
Libraries are of two kinds, public and private. Public libraries are open to all. Everybody can go there and read books. Private libraries are owned by individuals. They are meant for the owners themselves. The American library in Kathmandu is a public library. It is the biggest library in our country. The Kesar library is also a public library owns by the late Field- Marsal Kesar Shumser. Schools, colleges and universities have their own libraries. They are also private libraries.
Public libraries are very useful. They serve the poor people. Poor people cannot buy books. They can go to public libraries and read books. They may even borrow books to read at home. Libraries store many kind of books. We can read or borrow books according to our taste and need. Some libraries have rare books. They are very useful to scholars and learned men. A writer has said that a good library is a true university. Libraries serves all sections of people.
Libraries different sections. Books are classified and stored in our accordance with subjects. We can easily choose books on any subject we like. Libraries provide a congenial atmosphere for reading. We can read peacefully in a library. There is no noise or disturbance, for everybody is deeply engaged in reading. If we do not have time to read in a library we can borrow books and read at home.
Libraries are as important as schools and colleges. Our country is poor in libraries. We have a few libraries in some towns, but most of our villages. Every village should have a public library. All schools and campuses also should have libraries. Many of our schools have no library or have only poor collection of books. We should not allow this state of affairs to students should be encouraged to read various kinds of books. If they only text- books, they cannot have enough amount of knowledge.
